The Mattaponi Sundowners match for Saturday, July 23rd is a GO.

Here is the plan….

Dress Code is “Cowboy Casual”, see ( http://www.cavaliercowboys.org/2013/07/what-is-cowboy-casual/ ) for details.

We will only be using one shooting bay and shoot only one posse. The reason for this is that it is less work to reset the targets between stages 3 and 4, than it is to setup two entire bays of targets, props and tents. So, we will shoot stages 1 thru 3, take a short break while we reset targets and then shoot stages 4 thru 6.

There will be tents setup over the firing line, over the posse area, over the loading/unloading tables and we will have the fans going, very similar to what we did this past Sunday.

We will have plenty of ice water for drinking but also encourage everyone to bring their own favorite sport drinks.

We ask that every shooter evaluate their own situation and take into count the weather forecast and any heat advisories in order to make the decision that is best for them.

The Mattaponi Sundowners are hoping to shoot our 4th Saturday match, this Saturday, July 23rd, 2016, at the West Point Gun Club.

The current forecast for Saturday is “HOT”, probably too hot to shoot in even with tents and fans. However, a lot of things can change and as we all know the long range forecasts are wrong more than they are right.

So, I will be sending out an update on Friday morning with the official GO or NO GO decision.

The gates will be open by 8:00 am with registration running from 8:30 till 9:30, the mandatory safety meeting at 9:45 and the match itself starting at 10:00 am. The costs of the match is $15.00 for non members and $0 (free) for members of WPGC. Additional information is available on our web site at www.westpointgunclub.com.

The Mattaponi Sundowners will be holding their monthly 3rd Sunday match, this Sunday, July 17th, 2016, at the West Point Gun Club.

Unless the weather forecast changes to severe weather (winds and/or thunderstorms) we will be shooting the match on Sunday.

During the next couple of months it is very likely that we will be encountering “hot” weather. To address the “hot” weather, we will be doing the following; setting up tents over the shooting positions, setting up tents over the posse area, setting up tents over the loading/unloading tables, running multiple fans in every shooting bay, providing ice cold drinking water and adjusting the cowboy dress code.

For every match in July and August we will send out an update 24 hours before the match with the plan for that match. This update will include the dress code for the given match. We are taking this 24 hour update approach, because the long range forecast are wrong more than they are right.

In addition, we will be adjusting the stages to help address the “hot” weather. Our approach is to design the stages such that they can be shot from cover and to minimize the number of props. However, the stages will continue to be fun and interesting to shoot.

The match itself will start shooting at 12:30 pm with the gates opening at 10:00, registration running from 10:30 till Noon, and the mandatory safety meeting at 12:00, Noon. The costs of the match is $15.00 for non members and $0.00 (free) for members of WPGC. Additional information is available on our web site at www.westpointgunclub.com.

The Smoke on the Mattaponi IX match is now a part of history, a very special thanks to our sponsors, shooters, and everyone that helped make this match a huge success!!!!

As part of our contract with SASS, we can not award or recognize the overall top shooters, only category winners. However, I have attached the score results from ACES that lists all shooters sorted by overall finish. Remember that our Smoke Match is scored by Total Time, not rank point like we usually use. I have also attached the scores sorted by category and the list of Clean All Day shooters.

Please congratulate all of our Category Winners!!!! and our Clean All Day Shooters!!!!!!!

I have a lot of photographs from the match and will be getting those up on our web site over the next several days, www.westpointgunclub.com.

We were blessed with not one but two Frontier Cartridge Buckarettes, Cardinal Wind and Mocking Jay, Mocking Jay was shooting her first ever cowboy match today. These young ladies can show all you wimps who are afraid to shoot black powder, just how it is done.

Next year will be the 10th anniversary of our all black powder match, we are going to be working hard over the next year to make sure the 10th anniversary is one to remember. Write it down on your calendars, Saturday, June 24th, 2017, Smoke on the Mattaponi X, you won’t want to miss it.

The Mattaponi Sundowners held their monthly 3rd Sunday match today, Father’s Day, at the West Point Gun Club.

The weather was a little on the warm side but with plenty of tents setup for shade and all the fans going it was really not that bad.

Congratulations to Cody Maverick as the Top Overall Shooter. Congratulations to Beartooth, One Eyed Rooster, Smackwater, Will Sonnet, and Wistful McClintock as our Clean All Day Shooters.

PS – On the email I sent out with the scores from our 3rd Sunday match, I forgot to mention that we had the honor of welcoming a new shooter to our Cowboy Family. The cowboy was Frontier Mick, who has been observing several matches over the last couple of months and got to shoot his very first cowboy match with us on Sunday. So please join me in welcoming Frontier Mick to the fold and we are looking forward to shooting with him for many more matches to come.
