Smoke on the Mattaponi Results

Howdy Cowboys and Cowgirls,

Smoke on the Mattaponi 2025 is in the books. I’ll write a few words tomorrow after my brain cools down to room temperature; for now, special thanks to all who dismantled the props and targets and put everything away.

For those who like same-day scores (like I do), there are 3 attachments. Congrats to Dakota Rambler (Top Cowboy) and Quilla Star (Top Cowgirl) and all of the other award winners.

Continuing from yesterday, more scores for the SASS Virginia State Blackpowder Shootout are attached:
  • In the Plainsman side match, congratulations to winners Cholula Mike (Plainsman) and J.C. Phoenix (Plainswoman).
  • Detailed scores for the main match augment the version sent yesterday.  Note that all 6 SDQ’s were on Stage 5 (everybody’s favorite, I’m sure).  One was a ‘170’ with the rifle and five were ‘traveling’ with the shotgun.  Maybe we shouldn’t split long guns next time.
  • Congratulations to our 5 ‘clean’ shooters: Bingo MontanaBucksaw BobMajor GunzBrizco Z, and Wildcat Will.  We also had 3 shooters earn the ‘Dagnabbit’ award for ‘the one that got away’.  We have a nomination for a ‘train wreck’ award, but we don’t have one of those.
Lost and Found: a Smoke on the Mattaponi stool from 2024.  If it’s yours, let us know.

The cowboy with the camera was Buzzard Bayne.  Look for photos taken during the match on his Facebook page (give him a few days to post them).

Thanks to everyone for everything it took to make this match a success.
  • Club members: Potter County Kid (President), Cody Maverick (V.P.), Swifty McDraw, Wistful McClintock & Whiskey Mae, Major B.S. Walker, Ripsaw, Dakota Rambler, and Bingo Montana, who each contributed in various essential ways.
  • Sponsors, named and anonymous, who donated cash and/or merchandise valued at over $3,800 for the door prizes, raffle prizes, and awards.
  • Posse Leaders and Workers – the T/O’s, spotters, target setters, brass picker-uppers, unloading table officers, and scorekeepers who chipped in wherever necessary to keep 3 relatively small posses running smoothly.  Three posses instead of two larger ones saved us about an hour.
  • Each and every shooter.  Without you, there would be no match.  We sincerely hope that you enjoyed the match and hope that you join us next year on the 4th Saturday in June.
The Mattaponi Sundowners shoot on the 3rd Sunday and 4th Saturday in July, August, and September.  In October, which is breast cancer awareness month, we will have our annual Pat Graves Memorial Shoot for a Cure.  Pat Graves (a.k.a. Sassy Shooting Sours) started this match in 2012 to benefit the American Cancer Society and we have raised $110,598 for the ACS since then.  Hope you can join us this year.  All it takes to register, starting right now, is a simple email stating “I’ll be there”.

Thanks again for participating in Smoke on the Mattaponi
